Professional image of nursing and midwifery in East Africa: an exploratory analysis

Abstract Background Evidence suggests that there is a negative image of nursing and midwifery does not promote these professions as attractive career options. Furthermore, paucity studies documenting how perceived in East Africa where such exist they are country-specific. The aim this study was to explore views regarding the among nurses midwives three African countries, Kenya, Tanzania Uganda. Methods An exploratory descriptive cross-sectional administered online using Survey Monkey Questionnaires assessed perceptions professions. Descriptive statistics Pearson’s Chi square tests were used analyse data. semi-structured questions analysed content analysis. Results A total 551 participants took part study. majority females (61.8%), registered nurses/midwives (45.8%), aged 30–39 years (34.2%). Most respondents from Kenya (39.7%) Uganda (32.9%). About two-thirds nursing/midwifery both trusted respected expressed having level control over their portrayed. Conversely, conscious public had mixed responses about specifically, some members described professionals, knowledgeable caring, others be rude, cruel, unkind, lazy, unkempt, maids. Conclusion This offers an interesting insight Africa. Findings will inform policy makers educators key concepts affect findings design marketing materials help improve region other countries.
